THE ART OF BUSINESS EXCELLENCE


Business excellence has been defined variously , at various period of time by different management gurus. Almost invariably, all of them have picked up one "main" issue and projected this "main" issue as the determinant cause of attaining business excellence . Many businesses have paid heed to this solemn advice and tried their best to reach excellence through this route. However, the actual achievements can hardly justify the validity of this singular approach to business excellence.


From my wide experience in industry and business, I have come to the conclusion that business excellence is more of applying a judicious mixture of three major factors in the organization . These are Focus, Learning and level of Competency in the organization.

 

The more the leaders in business are tuned to the needs of the three factors, as stated above, the quicker these organizations move towards business excellence .

 

The way to measure each factor is crucial . Measurements are at the heart of business excellence and finding practical ways to measure are vital to the results. Organizations are engaged in a business and all measurements must be integral to the way of working within the organization. Measurements must not be seen as a requirement from top management to propel business excellence. People in the functions must be able to live and work with the measurement systems that are decided . Very soon they will discover that the measuring systems actually help them to perform better and better, over time. Hence finding practical ways to define measurement systems in the organization are very important in ensuring successful implementation of business excellence .

 

I have compiled a practical approach in this seminar , where all discussions are based on examples from industry. There is demonstrative evidence of how business excellence can be ushered in an organization. The flow of the seminar will be a proof of this practical approach . With interactive participation from the attendees, I expect to present a practical format for all organizations to attain business excellence , with a well tested and tried out plan .

He has been in the Board of Philips India for several years and was Vice President in the Asia Pacific Lighting division in Hong Kong , until recently .
